These are a few of my favorite things.

I love technology. Actually I should say I love tech toys.  While many I use as tools everyday, there are some I feel lost without. Others seemed like a good idea at the time but I never used as much as I thought I would.

My iPhone

My iPhone

My iPhone

My iPhone is the tool I use most.  So much more than just a phone, I use it constantly. I keep track of all my communications from email, text messages and phone calls.

I use Skype to video chat with my Mom face to face, and Facetime video service to keep up with my Kids and their smiles.  Both Skype and Facetime are so much better than a phone call.

GPS and Google maps help get you from here to there and even show how far you are from Favorite parts of Walt Disney World or St. Lucie County Parks.

The built in camera is good enough to replace the Canon Powershot digital camera we used for years.  It even does HD video with audio, and you can send emails and messages with your pics of within moments of taking them.

There is much more I could cover but I will do a dedicated article about that in the near future.

USB Thumb Drive

PNY Attache

PNY Attache

My USB thumb drive is another favorite.  I carry all my utility and installation files in its 16GB of memory.  I can just plug it in to any computer and copy the files to the desktop to install updates that would take hours to download and install.  It has been accidentally run through the laundry more time than I like to admit and it still works after 3 years.

The Model I carry is a PNY Attache, and though I have used other brands, these guys make them resistant to absent minded people who can’t empty their pockets.

My iPod

Next is my iPod Classic 80GB.  Yes, I know, my iPhone is an enhanced iPod, but it cannot hold all my music due to space.  My iPod also has a much better (in my opinion) audio output and sounds much better to my ears.

I can plug my iPod into our home audio receiver and play through out the house or I have portable speakers we take when traveling.  I also have car adapters so we can listen to our music when we drive.  The iPod has a built in DJ of sorts, called shuffle.  It is amazing how it plays your music like a favorite radio station, and if you hit something you’re not in the mood for, just push the dial to skip it.

By the way, it can also play movies and downloaded videos, but I personally don’t use it that way due to the small screen.

WiFi

WiFi is the technology that allows me to use many of my favorite things.  You may also know it as Wireless internet, but soon it’s going to be included in everything from appliances to cars.  It allows technology devices to talk to each other and share information.

WiFi base stations are springing up everywhere you go:  fast food restaurants, coffee shops and airports, planes trains and automobiles.  Many highways and turnpikes are installing a WiFi network for emergency vehicles and even the cell phone companies are working on more powerful versions.  More to come as this technology matures.

High Definition

This includes High Definition TVs and Computer Monitors.  My eyes find it so much less tiring than the low resolution displays of the past.  My electric bill is smaller due to the elimination of those big clunky CRTs that could heat a small house with the warmth they generate.  My back is feeling better because the Flat LCDs and Plasmas are a lot lighter when moving.

Blu-ray Discs have replaced DVDs for me.  This allows my HDTVs to show what they can really do, especially since that cable company wants most of our money to watch a few channels of programming with all the commercials.

I must include Redbox with this category as I can rent Blu-rays for $1.50 each, and I reserve them online before I pick them up.  As these Redboxs are all over (in my area – when we lived in rural NH, this did not apply), you can return them wherever you go.

Streaming Video

Streaming internet video is going to replace cable TV for us.  While not quite able to replace local news and live programing, I can watch far more good programing and far fewer commercials.  I actually can watch many of my favorite TV programs – a whole season at a time and in the order they were made.  We can watch on our Roku XS, on Computers and even Smartphones.

I think this area will see tremendous development over the next few years so stay tuned for much more.

These are just some of the technologies I have come to depend on every day.  Of course they are by no means the only tech I use.  Each of them depends an other applications or technologies to even work as well as they do.  Most need good rechargeable batteries that last a long time for example.

Fortunately, they continue to cost less as they get better.

NetflixNetflix has been around for a while.  Renting DVDs and getting them delivered in the mail to watch for a monthly fee has been popular for many of us.  The worst part was the wait for the post office to deliver them to you.  That wait is now over.
As a new service Netflix started offering its subscribers the added feature of watching movies instantly on your computer. Just open www.netflix.com and browse through the catalogue of programs and click to watch as soon as your download starts.  This became so popular that many have stopped renting DVDs any more and they watch only streaming Videos.  Netflix Started Charging separately and at only $8 a month, you can watch as much as your waking hours allow – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day if you can.

To me a great advantage to Netflix is I can finally enjoy my TV’s ability to display in High Definition.  Netflix offers up to 1080p resolution which is the highest currently.  No, not  all of their programs are HD but even the standard videos are better than what we watch for many years on cable.  Of course you can pause, resume and even come back later to pick-up where you left off.
Netflix Instant Queue

A View of Our Netflix Instant Queue

Netflix helps you collect programs you want to view in your instant queue.  It then displays you Queue at the top of the page when you return.  Netflix also make suggestions base on what your viewing choices so you have even more things to pick from.  Your menu will include categories like Action, Drama, Sci-fi/Fantasy.  Western fans will find some of the great classics as will almost any genre you can think of.  Independent and foreign films are here, some dubbed in English and some in subtitles.

Got a favorite TV show and you want to catch up on episodes you missed or want to view again? Choices from Flash Gordon Serials to Roy Rogers have been in the library.  I myself got caught up on Bones, a mystery from FOX.  I missed the first few years it was on and now Netflix has 6 seasons available to watch instantly.  I also enjoy many old favorite including some BBC programs.
If there is a downside to Netflix, it is that the deals they make to get some programming are only for a short time. This means as new additions come into the library, some leave.  As an example, Showtime offers some of their content on Netflix.  It is just for a few months at a time.  Quite often they return in a few months but not always.  Many studios like Disney are now making deals with Netflix directly so you can get access to movies that were in the theaters a few months ago.
Netflix on Roku Box

Netflix on the Roku Box

As I reviewed the ROKU XS recently, I am now using it for my Netflix access on my TV.  The move from the Computer screen to our big LCD and Plasma TVs has been wonderful.  The way you pick programs and movies on the Roku is much the same as on your computer and has become the standard by which its many competitors are now following.  Next time ,I will review Amazon’s prime Instant videos and compare them to Netflix to see where your money gets you the most bang.

TV Commercials…  Do you hate ‘em as much as we do?

Not the great commercials offered in the Superbowl every winter, but the dozen-plus repeated commercials that you have to deal with on network TV.

Sure, recording programs and skipping past commercials works fine, but if you’re starting from scratch, looking for cost-effective cable alternatives, the Roku box is a great one.

Roku has replaced VCRs and Tivo with internet streaming of TV shows and movies.  It still costs money, but quite a bit less than the Cable TV and recorder combination.  The Roku XS is $99 (other models are less) and uses your internet connection to download from hundreds of channels in the Roku Channel Store. Pause, resume and continue where you left off are all advantages enjoyed by Roku owners.

Netflix, Hulu + & Amazon Prime

Channels like Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Streaming Video are a few of the pay services there but many more are free.  Crackle uses advertising, but only 1 or 2 short ads before you return to the program.  Other channels are for old Drive-in movies or classic westerns.  Sports, Religion and News as well as Foreign Language channels are available from around the globe.

You will change the way you watch TV and at first it may seem strange or difficult.  With so many choices you can get overwhelmed by it all.  You just don’t change the channel anymore but now decide whether you watch a movie or maybe a season of a TV show.  I often dislike TV series because if you miss an episode, you can get lost in the continuing saga and not know how conversations relate because you missed the episode they are referring too.

The largest downside to this is that with few exceptions (such as live sports) you do not get all the current programs for free and/or immediate viewing.  Live TV is not available for streaming yet but it will be in the future.  With HULU+ you can watch shows the next day if you pay for their service.  At $8 a month (same as Netflix) you can watch shows as often as you want and at any time day or night. You can also rent or buy shows from Amazon starting at $2.99 an episode if you can’t wait. Some shows are available by the season for less than $20.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds is GREAT on a TV screen!

If you’ve ever played Angry Birds on an iPhone, you know how addicting this game can be.  Next, try it on anything larger, and the addiction continues.

The resolution coming through the Roku box is amazing, and makes the game a treat for the eyes, even when you shrink the image to full screen.  The controller included with the Roku 2 XS is easy to use.  We did not buy the Roku box specifically to get this game, but we have used it and enjoyed it a great deal.

Final Thoughts

Roku is not the only choice but it has advantages over most other options at this time:

  •  It is small, about the size off a hockey puck and uses little electricity.
  • It has 1080p High Definition output with an HDMI cable (although not all programs are HD).
  • It can connect to the internet wirelessly or with an ethernet cable.
  • It can allow you to watch your own photos and video from a USB drive you plug in.

By next year at this time I am certain there will be even more reasons to give up your cable bill.  Check back for updates.

As I was writing about smart phones, they were busy becoming a tool in the arsenal of Modern Medicine. Since then the smart phones have been approved by the FDA and HIPPA to be used in Hospitals and treatment facilities by Doctors and staff. Web sites have been created to help medical professionals understand what is available and how it can benefit them. Now the giant leaps are just around the corner.

Portable Medical Scanner for your Smart PhonePeople will soon be accessing their health professional in new and exciting ways. As it is now, you travel to your Doctors office so he can check your Blood Pressure, Pulse and Respirations. Yes there are currently home versions of these but they require help at least to set up and use.

Imagine touching your finger or hand to the screen of an iPhone or iPad. Touchscreen sensors will send the information to your Doctor and record it. Yes, it will include Blood Pressure, Pulse and Respirations as well as Temperature, CO2 levels (blood gases)… and things just being imagined.

The built-in cameras can allow the Doctor to talk with you in High Definition and even use the cameras to see in you eyes with built in LED Flash/Lightbulb uses to provide illumination.

Like much of the Technology out there already this will all require an internet connection, whether it is built in to you home or through a cell phone (Smartphone) data plan. Much of this is possible with a home computer, but the optical (camera) and motion sensors and gyroscopes, GPS chips all combine with the touchscreen sensors and microphones built into to the iPhones and Androids sold by the cellphone companies.

Those of you who are Star Trek fans will remember the Tri-Corder used by Spock to evaluate planets. Bones the Doctor had Specialized medical versions he used to treat everything. The imagination of Gene Roddenberry and his fellow writers may have inspired todays inventors but even more is around the corner.

Quick Note: SIRI is available on the new iPhones. A voice activated digital assistant that can answer questions and do things for you. While it is new, I foresee amazing things as a result of the technology that made it possible. You will be hearing more about this. Have fun!

Moshi-moshi iPhone headset

This looks old fashioned, but is actually an iPhone accessory!

Telephones are, arguably, the most changed piece of technology that we currently use in our society.  This is ironic considering that with all the changes made in the history of telephone use, one could still use an original phone model, provided it’s plugged into a land line jack.

Most of us have moved on from the type of phone you plug into the wall, other than to charge the batteries.  Cell phones, Satellite phones and IP phones connected to the Internet have helped us move away from that one place the phone was plugged into.

As a youth I read about Dick Tracy and his wrist radio – that was what many envisioned as the future phone, and I too thought that would be the perfect telephone to take with me everywhere.  I am glad that’s not what we got in this new future.

Now we have Smartphones. They make and receive calls, but that’s only the beginning!

They can send and receive email or do text messaging when an email is too much. They can take pictures and then edit and publish those pictures to the Internet, email them to friends or send them to a printer to frame and display on your favorite desk or mantle.

Convenience is just the beginning, and saving money is next:

  • Download coupons you carry in your phone for the store.
  • Scan barcodes with your phone camera, and search for the lowest price at stores near you or on Ebay and Amazon.
  • Retrieve discount & loyalty cards from your phone, at the cash register.

Do you like to travel?

  • There are apps you can use as a GPS (many are free), and get the same kind of directions you get from a car model GPS.
  • Traveling up and down I95, then the I95 exit guide can tell you what services, store and food opportunities are there.
  • Visiting Walt Disney World, then see wait times for rides and times for shows and events without all of those paper guides you put in the wrong pocket when you need them.
  • Traveling anywhere becomes more fun when you know where you are and what is around you.
  • Like to try new restaurants but you want to know if it’s worth the risk, then check to se what others have said because there is an application for that.

Parents with kids, do you know where they are?  Smartphones can show you on a map within inches.  Need to change dinner plans and the kids aren’t home, send them a text or even better, video chat with them face to face. That is one of my favorites as my son is in Iraq.  While it doesn’t always work, when it does I use Skype or Facetime or even Yahoo Instant Messenger on my phone to talk to people via their computer, Smartphone or some other mobile device.

Using one of the many utilities on my phone, I can write notes, memos, lists and even record a voice memo when I cannot type because I’m driving or don’t have time.  There is a calculator, a compass, a calendar to set reminders and alarms as well as a clock with multiple time zones.

If none of the examples above suit your needs, there is a store where you can download more applications.  From quick news updates to the down-low on the financial markets, weather apps to get your forecast or see the radar maps of storms.  Games, games and more game are available and while you may not say you like games, there is solitaire (my 81-year-old mother’s favorite), Angry Birds (very addictive and one of my wife’s favorites) and many classic arcade games like pong and Pac Man.

Music fans can listen to their collection where ever they are, or tune in one of many radio stations, even smart services like Pandora.  You can turn your phone into an instrument and record your own songs.  Become a DJ and run everything from your phone.  All these possibilities, and more that haven’t been thought of yet, are coming to a pocket or purse near you.

But, back to the original question:  Am I smart enough?

I would say yes to anyone.

It may take some classes (there are many available), or you might even have to have your grand-kids show you how.

But, consider this: if you are reading this you already use a computer and that’s all they really are – very small portable computers.  With Internet and telephone combined together, the Smartphone will make you smarter about living with convenience.

Need to replace a part?  Take a picture and go show the sales person at the store or have it to refer to when you get there.

See something you want to know more about?  Just take a picture, scan a barcode or send a message to someone with a question.

Now, keep in mind that there are many different products that call themselves Smartphones, and one of those will be the answer to your needs.  Maybe you need a Blackberry for work or because all your friends are hooked on the “Crackberry”.  Opinions vary widely, so I’ll share mine…

For the older members of my audience, there is only one choice, and that’s an iPhone from Apple. My reasoning is simple: as we get older (at least most of us), our eyes suffer a slight loss of acuity due to macular degeneration. Meaning we need help seeing our world with reading glasses, Bi-focals or a magnifying lens.

The Apple iPhone has a screen called a retina display. It has more than twice as many pixels (the little color dots that make a picture) as any other phone and that makes it easier to see. Many companies make and sell similar products and most cost a little less but they are cheaper because they are not as good.

Finally, is it time to get rid of that old phone and the bill that comes with it?  Yes, and though there will certainly be a new bill that starts coming with the smart phone and it’s not inexpensive, you will also certainly start doing things differently as a result.

Join us on this new journey into the future, and get smarter!

The Future is Coming... in fact, it's already here!

The Future is Coming... in fact, it's already here!

Technology has always had a large influence on our world.  Fire, stone tools, metal , gunpowder and computers all changed our world, and we can expect new technology to continue to have a major effect on us.

This blog will be about some of the possible ideas that are here now or about to be, and we will also look at some of the things that are already changing our world.

Lets begin with an old technology that is about to evolve by adapting to our world so it can be more easily integrated into our lives. We all know about solar electricity and wind power and have seen it used in a limited way every day. Until now it has been expensive and complicated for the average person to buy and install and it would take 10 years or more to pay for itself. You always had to have a system which did the job of converting the electricity into a usable format compatible with our electric system we plug into everyday.

A new product that will soon be in the stores is about to change all that.

Clarion Power has created a product that plugs into your electric outlet and sends the power back out to the electric company. They have both solar electric awnings and a wind generator that can be installed by the average homeowner and just plug in to the wall outlet. With costs below $1000 they have finally reached the price that allow Wal-Mart, Home Depot and any other retail store to carry products that don’t require an electrician – only hand tools – to install.

If every home in Florida had a 400 Watt solar awning, it would at least pay for the lights they use. If they also had the Smart Box wind generator, then the electric companies would have real competition.

I am not the only the only person who sees the value in these products; General Electric just announced last November that Clarian Power won the GE Ecomagination Consumer Innovation Award. More than 3000 products were competing for the prize which includes investment capitol to help bring the product to market.

One possible future could include products like these replacing the need for more power plants and the need for foreign oil. Check out the Clarian Power site and see what I am talking about. Combine these products with the Atmospheric Water Generator this company sells and we could solve some of Florida’s most pressing issues, clean power and water.
